If you're reading this, your garage probably isn't working the way it should. Maybe it's full of gear you can't find. Maybe you're parking on the driveway because there's no room inside. Maybe you've bought cheap shelving before and watched it sag, rust or buckle within a year.
This guide covers everything — the right shelving type for your garage, how to choose a load rating, the difference between steel and timber, what things cost and where to buy in Australia. By the end you'll know exactly what you need and why.
Why your garage storage actually matters
Most Australians treat their garage as a dumping ground. Research suggests up to 50% of Australian homeowners can't fit their car in their own garage due to clutter — and 80% of that clutter is caused by disorganisation, not lack of space.
A properly organised garage adds measurable value to your home. Real estate research indicates a well-presented, organised garage can add $5,000–$15,000 to perceived property value in competitive Australian markets. And studies consistently link cluttered home environments to elevated cortisol levels throughout the day.
The garage isn't just storage. For a lot of Australians it's a workshop, a hobby space, a mental reset. It deserves to be treated like one.
The four types of garage storage in Australia
1. Freestanding steel shelving — the most popular and practical option for most Australian garages. Self-supporting with built-in bracing — no wall fixings required. Available in Light Duty (200kg per shelf), Medium Duty (300kg per shelf) and Heavy Duty (500kg per shelf). Can be repositioned or taken with you when you move.
2. Wall-mounted shelving — fixed to wall studs. Lower upfront cost but limited positioning, can damage walls and can't be moved. Not suitable for rental properties. Load ratings typically lower than freestanding steel.
3. Overhead storage racks — suspended from the ceiling. Good for seasonal items and bulky gear that doesn't need regular access. Requires ceiling joist fixing and isn't suitable for heavy loads.
4. Cabinets and lockers — enclosed storage for tools and equipment you want secured or dust-free. Higher cost, lower storage density than open shelving. Best used as a complement to open shelving rather than a replacement.
For most Australian garages, the answer is freestanding steel shelving as the foundation — then add a workbench, hooks and accessories to complete the system.
How to choose the right load rating
This is where most people go wrong. Many brands advertise a total unit load rating — "600kg capacity" sounds impressive until you realise that's spread across 4 shelves, which works out to just 150kg per shelf. A loaded toolbox can weigh 40–80kg, a small compressor 30–50kg and a set of car tyres 60–80kg. You can hit 150kg on a single shelf faster than you think.
Always ask for the per-shelf rating.
| What you're storing | Recommended per-shelf rating |
|---|---|
| Garden supplies, craft gear, light boxes | 100–200kg per shelf |
| Tools, sporting gear, household storage | 200–300kg per shelf |
| Car parts, toolboxes, compressors | 300–500kg per shelf |
| Trade equipment, industrial loads | 500kg+ per shelf |
GSS load ratings by range: Light Duty — 200kg per shelf. Medium Duty — 300kg per shelf (4 shelves, 75mm adjustment increments). Heavy Duty — 500kg per shelf (8 shelves, 50mm adjustment increments). All ratings are UDL — tested, not estimated.

SHOP NOWSteel vs timber garage shelving — the honest comparison
| Factor | Timber DIY | GSS Steel |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Lower | Higher |
| Load rating | Unknown — estimated | 200–500kg per shelf (tested) |
| Assembly time | Full day | Under 30 minutes |
| Moisture resistance | Poor without treatment | Excellent (powder coat) |
| Adjustability | Fixed once built | 50–75mm increments |
| Moveable | No (wall-mounted) | Yes (freestanding) |
| Warranty | None | 5 years |
| Humid climates | Not ideal | Yes |
When timber makes sense
Timber is still reasonable in specific situations: if you need a genuinely custom size that no standard unit fits; for a workbench top (timber is quieter and easier to replace when damaged); or for very light storage where load rating isn't a concern.
When steel is clearly the better choice
If you're storing tools, car parts or anything heavy — you need a published load rating. If you're in a humid climate — powder-coated steel handles Australian coastal and tropical conditions significantly better than untreated timber. If you want it done this weekend — 30 minutes vs a full day. If you might move house — freestanding steel shelving comes with you.
A DIY 2m timber shelf system might cost $200 in materials but take 6–8 hours to build. At a conservative $30/hour your time cost is $180–$240. Add $60 for paint or sealant and you're at $380–$440. A GSS 2m Medium Duty unit is comparable in cost, assembles in 30 minutes, is load-rated to 300kg per shelf and comes with a 5-year warranty.
Choosing the right size for your garage
Standard Australian garage dimensions: Single garage — approximately 3m x 5.5–6m internally. Double garage — approximately 6m x 6m internally. Large garage/shed — 6m x 9m or larger.
Single garage: One or two 1.5m units along the side or rear wall gives significant storage without eating into parking space.
Double garage: A 2m or 2.4m unit along the rear wall is the most popular setup. Two 1.5m units side by side works equally well and gives flexibility.
Large garage or shed: Multiple 2m or 2.4m units side by side for a full wall of storage. All GSS units are 600mm deep — accommodating standard Australian storage tubs from Bunnings, Officeworks and IKEA.
The complete garage storage system
The most effective garages combine three elements:
1. Shelving for bulk storage — floor-to-near-ceiling freestanding steel shelving along the walls. GSS Medium Duty for home garages, Heavy Duty for workshops.
2. A workbench for a dedicated work surface — a steel workbench at 950mm working height gives you a stable platform and keeps your floor clear. GSS workbenches are available in the same widths as the shelving range so everything lines up.
3. Hooks for hanging storage — GSS hooks clip directly onto the shelving uprights without drilling into walls. Hang tools, leads, hoses and equipment at eye level. Single hooks for lighter items, double hooks for ladders and heavier gear.
