Sports equipment is one of the biggest contributors to garage chaos. Balls roll under shelves. Bikes fall over. Helmets end up on the floor. Boards lean against walls and topple onto cars.
The problem isn't usually lack of space. It's lack of system. Here's how to fix it.
The challenge with sports equipment storage
Sports gear comes in awkward shapes and sizes — and most of it gets used irregularly, sitting in storage for months between seasons. The temptation is to pile it in a corner. The result is a corner you can never find anything in.
Good sports storage does three things: keeps everything visible, keeps everything accessible, and keeps the floor clear.
Step 1 — Sort by frequency of use
Before you buy any storage, sort your gear into three categories:
Used weekly: balls, bats, racquets, helmets, training gear. These need to be accessible at eye level or below — not buried behind seasonal equipment.
Used monthly: camping gear, surfboards, ski equipment, fishing tackle. These can go on higher shelves or hooks where they're out of the way but still reachable.
Used once a year: Christmas skiing trip equipment, occasional hiking gear, rarely-used sports. These go on the highest shelves.
Step 2 — Choose the right shelving
For a family garage with mixed sports equipment, a GSS 1.5m or 2m Medium Duty unit is the most practical choice. Here's why:
4 adjustable shelves — set heights to exactly fit balls, helmets, boot bags and boxes rather than wasting vertical space. Adjustment in 75mm increments.
300kg per shelf — more than enough for even a heavily loaded sports shelf.
600mm depth — accommodates almost all standard sports storage tubs and bags.
2m height — maximises storage without requiring a ladder for regular access items.
Step 3 — Use hooks for the awkward stuff
Bikes, surfboards, stand-up paddleboards, skis, snowboards and long-handled equipment don't belong on shelves — they belong on hooks.
GSS hooks clip directly onto the uprights of any GSS shelving unit without drilling. They're strong enough for bikes and boards and can be repositioned at any height along the upright.
What works well on hooks:
- Bikes (hung by the wheel or frame)
- Surfboards and bodyboards
- Skis and ski poles
- Tennis and badminton racquets
- Nets and bags
- Hoses and extension leads
Step 4 — Use tubs for small loose items
Balls, shin guards, gloves, goggles, caps and small accessories don't stack well on open shelves. A labelled tub for each sport keeps loose stuff contained and visible.
Standard 35L or 50L storage tubs fit perfectly on GSS shelving (600mm deep). Label each tub by sport or family member and you've solved the "where did my cricket box go" problem permanently.
A practical sports garage layout example
GSS 1.5m Medium Duty unit — right side wall:
- Shelf 1 (bottom, 400mm high): balls, bats, racquets in tubs
- Shelf 2 (600mm from floor): helmets, boot bags, smaller gear
- Shelf 3 (900mm from floor): seasonal equipment in labelled tubs
- Shelf 4 (1,200mm from floor): rarely used gear, camping accessories
GSS hooks on uprights: 2 bikes hung at the rear, surfboards on hooks at the top.
Result: everything visible, nothing on the floor, bikes off the ground and out of the way, seasonal gear accessible but not in the way.
The equipment that causes the most problems — and how to solve it
Bikes: Hang them on hooks — either on shelving uprights or a dedicated wall hook. Two GSS hooks at the right height handle most bike sizes.
Surfboards and bodyboards: GSS hooks on the upper uprights handle boards up to standard longboard length. Store horizontally where possible to avoid warping.
Football/soccer/basketball goals: Fold flat where possible and lean behind a shelving unit. If they won't fold, dedicate a corner to bulky items.
Balls: A labelled tub on a low shelf solves the rolling problem completely.
Camping gear: Usually the bulkiest seasonal item. Dedicate one full shelf to camping. Sleeping bags compress well; tents and camp chairs less so.
Good sports equipment storage comes down to three things: shelving for containers and bags, hooks for bikes and boards, and tubs for loose small items. A GSS 1.5m or 2m Medium Duty unit handles most family garages.
