How Much Does Garage Shelving Cost in Australia? (2026 Guide)

Garage shelving prices in Australia range from $30 for a flat-pack unit to $500+ for a single heavy duty steel unit — and the difference in quality is enormous. This guide explains what you get at each price point so you can make an informed decision.

The five price tiers of garage shelving in Australia

Tier 1: Budget / flat-pack ($30–$100 per unit)

This is the Bunnings, Big W and Kmart tier. Typically plastic or very light gauge steel. Load ratings are low — often 50–100kg total across the whole unit, which works out to 25–50kg per shelf. Warranties are typically 12 months or less. These units work for very light storage — craft supplies, pantry overflow, gardening chemicals — but are not suitable for tools, car parts or anything heavy.

Watch out for total unit ratings that sound impressive but are very low per-shelf. "200kg capacity" across 4 shelves is just 50kg per shelf.

Tier 2: Mid-range steel ($100–$200 per unit)

Better gauge steel, higher load ratings, longer warranties. The GSS Light Duty range sits here — 200kg per shelf, powder-coated finish, 5-year warranty. Good for garden sheds, craft rooms, laundries and light household storage.

Tier 3: Quality steel — Medium Duty ($150–$300 per unit)

This is the GSS Medium Duty range. 300kg per shelf (UDL rated), 4 shelves adjustable in 75mm increments, powder-coated black steel, 5-year warranty. The best value option for most home garages. Handles tools, sporting gear, car accessories and general heavy storage without any issues.

Tier 4: Heavy Duty / Trade ($300–$600+ per unit)

The GSS Heavy Duty range. 500kg per shelf, 8 shelves adjustable in 50mm increments, heavy gauge steel, 5-year warranty. Built for workshop, trade and commercial use. If you're a tradie, car enthusiast or have a serious workshop, this is the tier to buy in. Contact GSS for current pricing.

Tier 5: Custom fitted garages ($2,000–$15,000+)

Full garage fitout companies offer custom cabinets, overhead storage, floor coatings and integrated shelving systems. High-end, high cost and not necessary for most Australians. Only worth considering for premium properties where the garage is a feature room.

The hidden cost of cheap shelving

The $79 Bunnings shelf unit looks like a bargain. But consider:

  • If it fails in 13 months, the warranty is expired and you're buying again
  • If it sags under load, the gear on it can fall — a safety issue and potential damage cost
  • If it rusts in a humid garage, it needs replacement sooner than expected
  • If you buy the wrong size and it's too small, you're buying again

A GSS Medium Duty unit at $180–$250 with a 5-year warranty costs less per year over its lifespan than a $79 unit you replace every 2–3 years. And the 300kg per shelf rating means you're unlikely to ever outgrow it.

What affects the price?

Size: Wider and taller units cost more. A 1m unit is significantly cheaper than a 2.4m unit.

Steel gauge: Heavier gauge steel costs more to manufacture. It's also what makes the difference between a shelf that holds 300kg and one that holds 50kg.

Load rating: Higher load rating = heavier steel = higher cost. You're paying for capacity — that's the right way to think about it.

Warranty: A 5-year warranty signals the manufacturer is confident in the product. Short warranties (12 months) are often a signal of lower quality.

Freight: For large heavy duty units, freight can add $50–$200+ depending on your location. GSS has dealers and depots nationally with free pickup available — enter your postcode to find your nearest option.

Is expensive garage shelving worth it?

Yes — within reason. The difference between a $30 flat-pack unit and a $200 GSS Medium Duty unit is enormous in terms of load capacity, durability and warranty. That jump is worth making.

The difference between a $200 GSS unit and a $2,000 custom fitout is largely aesthetic. For most Australians, the GSS range delivers all the practical storage they need at a fraction of the cost of a custom fitout.
